The Sustainable Energy West (SEW) Strategic Plan is a comprehensive five-year roadmap designed to lower greenhouse gas emissions and enhance the natural environment in East Galway. Published in October 2021, the document focuses on the communities of Loughrea, Woodford, and Abbey, addressing the local impacts of the global climate and biodiversity crises. The plan outlines specific initiatives for sustainable transport, such as greenways and electric vehicle infrastructure, alongside strategies for home energy efficiency and renewable power generation. It also emphasises the urgent need to protect local biodiversity, noting the decline of native forests and the extinction risks facing pollinators like wild bees. By aligning with national net-zero targets, the report provides a framework for transitioning the region toward a more sustainable agricultural and residential future. This collaborative effort was supported by Galway Rural Development and European funding to ensure a resilient local ecosystem.
